Yucca rostrata loves dry earth... tracky less wind and arid winters. Ficus carica warm summers and sun, so it´s though zone 9 very difficult to clultivate there. If you want to earn the same amount fruits as in e.g Karlsruhe or Lyon you need more plants then. A mate of me works for a italian credit institute in Bergen and Oslo and had a few experiences. I visited him 2006. His Ficus in his garden near Bergen is ok, but the friuts will not growing to eat them... because in end of august it´s too cold there. The winters are really mild for that region, but that´s not all.
But i agree, in gardens, beside houses the wind is not that problem for plams.
My mother come from northern Italy (Rovereto) and there we had often frost down to -15°C at night. But for most plants no problem because of the higher day temperatures (5-10°C)... the regenaration time in Norway is not so long and good as in more southern regions.
In my last post you can follow the climate charts...
But i never ment, that exotic wouldn´t grow in Bergen, i ment it´s difficult to cultivate there although it´s Zone 9. ;)
