Matteuccia struthiopteris 'Jumbo' (Dryopteridaceae)
For those of you who love giant tree ferns, but don't live in a rain forest, the 'Jumbo' Ostrich Fern is your best substitute. Already one of our largest native ferns, the selection 'Jumbo' is 50% larger than the average Ostrich Fern. Established plants can reach 7' in height. Found from Virginia west to the Mississippi and north into Canada, this cold hardy fern will also tolerate the heat of the middle South. Use in a natural setting where it can spread and form a colony or in a formal garden as a showy specimen. Like many ferns, the more water it gets, the more sun it can take. Native.
